Three Katanga lion cubs born

The Zlín Zoo is writing a new chapter in its history. After breeding lions for almost 60 years, our efforts have been finally rewarded. The father to our triplets is ten-years-old Abamboo, acquired from the Swiss Basel Zoo in 2015, mother is three-years-old Kwale, acquired from the French Parc Planète Sauvage in 2023. We are over the moon, because the veterinary examination of Abamboo in the past revealed that his fertility is rather low. We didn’t expect he could ever father a cub.

However, this fall season arrived with suprise: Kwale gave birth to three lion cubs, two females and one male. The labor itself was smooth, Kwale immediately proved her maternal instincts. She is treating the cubs with great patience, providing all of them plenty of care and attention. The cubs appear to be healthy and vital. However, they are still too young, thus we are going to keep them safe and warm in the breeding facility. If everything goes well, the visitors will be able to see the merry little cubs in their outdoor exhibit in March 2025. „The birth of the cubs is very meaningful to us, because they were born in the year we begun building a rescue center for lions confiscated from private breeders due to poor living conditions or illegal breeding,“ announced Roman Horský, the director of the Zlín Zoo. Thus, the birth of the triplets brings together the past, the present and the future of lion breeding in our zoo.
