Rescued from poor living conditions: Two lionesses find a new home at the Zlín Zoo
Two lionesses confiscated from a private breeder have arrived at the Zlín Zoo, marking a significant first step for the zoo’s newly opened rescue and breeding centre for lions. The animals were seized after authorities discovered they were being kept without the required permits for species needing special care. Following a decision by the Municipal authority in Rokycany, the lionesses became state property and were transferred to Zlín erlier this week.
According to Roman Horský, the director of the Zlín Zoo, both animals handled the journey well and are now beginning a carefully managed adaptation period. For now, they remain in indoor enclosure, where they can gradually get used to their new surroundings and caretakers. "Every animal needs time and individual approach, and our top priority is to ensure they feel safe and stress-free," Horský said.
In the coming weeks, the lionesses will be introduced slowly to a group of three female Katanga lions already living at the zoo. Initial contact will be limited to visual and scent interaction, with closer integration dependable on the pace the newcomers will adapt. If all goes well, they may join the others in the spacious outdoor enclosure in the Karibuni district soon.
Visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of the new lionesses will need to be patient - it is too early to predict when the lionesses will be ready to make their appearance to the public.
The rescue highlights the broader mission of the new centre for lions, opened in September 2025, which focuses not only on breeding but also on providing a safe haven for animals rescued from illegal breeding or poor living conditions. Whilst being long regarded as a leader in conservation and international breeeding programmes, the Zlín zoo continues to strengthen its role as a modern institution fully committed to animal welfare and responsible care.
