From now on, our elephants and sheeps share the same enclosure

A surprise awaits you in the vast habitat for our African bush elephants in Karibuni. Along with the elephants, blackhead Somali sheeps can also enjoy the area.

We did not introduce these species to each other randomly – in the future, we would like to provide the elephants an access to other enclosures in Karibuni. We also plan keeping african ungulates in their exhibition, and this is the reason we have relocated the Somali sheep there. At first, we are going to observe the reaction of the species, and if everything keeps going well, we are going to gradually prepare the elephants to be introduced to other sorts of animals.

So far, much to our delight everything goes great. The elephants quickly adapted to the presence of the sheep, and so the sheeps did to their big enclosure-mates. In the case the sheep started feeling uncomfortable, they can take a shelter in one of the peripheral parts of the exhibit, where they cannot be followed by the large mammals.

The combination of elephants and sheep will be also beneficial for the grass in the paddock, as elephants and sheep graze grass in different ways.

You have the very first opportunity to observe the elephants in the company of other species. Visit Karibuni to check for yourself!
