The pride divided: Our lion family reorganized as the cubs reach adulthood

In october, our lion triplets born on Halloween 2024 are going to celebrate their second birthday. As they are approaching maturity, the time has come to adjust the composition of their pride.

The three cubs - two females and one male - are gradually reaching adulthood. As this stage, the new social relationships naturally begin forming within a pride.

The three cubs—two females and one male—born in October 2024 are gradually reaching adulthood. As new social relationships naturally begin to form within a pride at this stage, we decided this week to reorganise our breeding group of Congo lions.

In the new rescue and breeding centre for lions in Karibuni, both young lionesses remain together with their mother Kwale. The adult male Abamboo and the young male have been moved to the original lion exhibit in the zoo grounds at Zoo Zlín.

Another important factor behind this change was our wish to avoid using hormonal contraception in the young females. While it could temporarily prevent breeding, it would not be suitable in the long term for their potential future participation in the breeding programme. Separating the males was therefore a more natural and husbandry-appropriate solution.

In cooperation with the coordinator of the European breeding programme for Congo lions, we will now look for a new home for the male so that he may contribute to the breeding of this rare subspecies in the future. Decisions regarding further breeding of our lionesses will be made based on the recommendations of the programme coordinator. ?

Dospělého samce Abamboo a mladého samce jsme přesunuli do původní expozici lvů v areálu zoo.

K úpravě složení chovné skupiny lvů nás vedla i další důležitá skutečnost - chtěli jsme se u mladých samic vyhnout použití hormonální antikoncepce.
