Beat the heatwave and rush to the zoo!
Even during the current spell of tropical temperatures, Zoo Zlín remains a pleasant destination for visitors. A walk beneath the shade of mature trees, refreshing misting systems, and an excellent selection of ice cream and chilled beverages contribute to a truly enjoyable day at the zoo.
The high temperatures pose no problem for the animals either. They take advantage of the shade, ponds and pools in their spacious enclosures, as well as the comfort of air-conditioned pavilions. “The Zlín Zoo is one of the most visited places in our city, and even during this heatwave it continues to demonstrate that it is exceptionally well prepared both for animal care and for ensuring visitors’ comfort. It is a testament to the long-term professional work of the entire local team,” said the Mayor of Zlín, Jiří Korec.
When designing and building our exhibits, we always ensure that the animals have access to sufficient shaded areas where they can retreat during periods of extreme heat. “The vast majority of our enclosures also feature streams, ponds or water pools where the animals can cool off. Our African bush elephants are now making even greater use of their favorite mud wallow and the large lake in the Karibuni area, while our jaguars, including one-year-old female Mayara, head to the outdoor pool several times a day,” explained Romana Mikešová, Head of Marketing of the zoo.
Several enclosures are also equipped with water sprayers and misting systems, including those for the Humboldt penguins, the walk-through aviary in the Amazon area, and selected breeding facilities. “We have also ensured a sufficient supply of fresh drinking water for all animals. Our keepers replace the water in bowls more frequently, as it warms up quickly in hot weather and loses its refreshing quality,” Mikešová added.
The Zlín Zoo had prepared for the arrival of the heatwave well in advance. “Before the onset of the high temperatures, we inspected and adjusted the air-conditioning systems in our pavilions. We carefully regulate them to maintain optimal conditions for the animals. Everything is continuously monitored and evaluated so that we can respond immediately to any changes or fluctuations,” emphasized zoologist Václav Štraub.
The zoo has also taken steps to ensure the comfort of the visitors. “Most of the paths and walkways throughout the zoo are shaded by the canopies of mature trees. Visitors can also enjoy numerous shaded rest areas and cooling features, including a misting system near the main entrance and another by the stingray exhibit. Children will certainly appreciate the water fountains near the seasonal entrance, as well as the wide selection of ice cream flavours and chilled drinks,” Romana Mikešová said with a smile.
For parking, we recommend using the spacious free car park located at the seasonal entrance to the zoo. Thanks to photovoltaic carports covering part of the parking area, visitors can park their vehicles in the shade throughout the day.
