New Gibbon Exhibit "Gibonika" Opened

On Saturday, April 5, Zlín Zoo officially opened Gibonika, a new indoor exhibit dedicated exclusively to silvery gibbons.

The opening ceremony was attended by Zoo Director Roman Horský and three winners of an online competition focused on gibbons.

The exhibit was created through a complete renovation of the former indoor space for gibbons and Malayan tapirs in the zoo’s Asian section. It now features 120 square meters of space with a height of 4.5 meters, designed to closely replicate the gibbons’ natural habitat. Thanks to large glass walls, visitors can observe the animals year-round. The gibbons also have access to their original outdoor island habitat via ropes and ladders.

Next to the exhibit is a new relaxation zone inspired by Southeast Asia, featuring a sensory walking path, Buddha statues, and various ethnographic and artistic elements.

A day before the opening, the female gibbon Isabell gave birth to her third offspring. Silvery gibbons are among the world’s most endangered primates, with only around 2,000 individuals remaining in the wild. Zlín Zoo has housed this rare species since 2014. The current family includes male Peucang, female Isabell, and their three young.
