In southern Africa, 8 of 9 native vulture species are threatened. Currently, white-back vulture is threatened the most, being indicated as critically endangered. Over the past three decades, its population has declined by 80%.
Because of this concerning fact, Zlín Zoo decided to support the monitoring project of the VulPro organization. The project is focused on monitoring occurence, fly paths and nesting of the white-back vultures. Tragically, this species is on the verge of extinction due to the electrocution with overhead powerlines. The African powerlines are often outdated and unsafe to birds. Moreover, in Africa, there is also an increasing number of poaching incidents, because the demand of the illegal souvenirs is on the rise, craving vulture corpses either for trophies or good luck charms.
The VulPro monitoring project is going to cover all of southern Africa – southern parts of Mozambique, the kingdoms of Lesotho and Eswatini and the republics of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe. To work as efficiently as possible, the organization takes into the account every gathered information available from the past monitoring activities of other organizations.
