General info

The ZOO has now for decades played a significant role in protection of endangered animal species. Today, mere keeping of rare animals in captivity is not enough. The fundamentals should be the protection of natural eco-systems and protection of endangered species, in the area where they grow, known as protection in situ.

In order that we may fulfil this important mission, it is very important that we maintain membership in the following organizations:

ENDANGERED PROGRAMS
The task of rescue programs in Zoological gardens must protect those species that are near or are threatened with extinction. The European Endangered programs are under the auspices of the EAZA and world-wide then under the WAZA.

Brazilian TapirsSUPPORT OF PROJECTS

Our ZOO is among the few ZOOs in Central and Eastern Europe and animal protection organizations that participate in an extensive project of tapirs’ protection. We have contributed $1,500.00 to organize a symposium of research scientists from the entire South American continent and have also contributed to the activity under the Fund to Save the Tapirs. The fund was created in 2003. Its principal task is to obtain finances for support of individual research and rescue activities.

INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGNS
From 2000 on, EAZA regularly declares international campaigns. It is trying to inform the public about problems concerning selected group of animals or protected territory. The very first one was the Bush Meat Campaign to stop hunting rare and endangered species in the tropical forests of Africa. This was followed by campaigns to save the South American Rain Forest, tigers, turtles, the Island of Madagascar, amhibians and European Carnivores.
