Central and South America

Interior of Tropical Yucatan hall
• Tropical Yucatan hall
The tropical hall, which was open in October 2006, is entirely unique in its own way. It represents the wealth and colour variety of the Central American Rain Forest. It is a home to more than 20 species of animals. There are 1,700 tropical plants, representing roughly 196 plant type species. Besides animals and plant life, the hall also offers encountering the long-extinct Maya civilization, which was booming on the Yucatan peninsula more than thousand years ago.

With the pavilion having to look like a natural forest environment, we tried to fulfil this very arduous project in collaboration with various professional foreign companies. Out of approximately 55 companies in Europe and overseas, it was only one company that was capable of delivering plants in more or less requested range, i.e. the Danish company Tropical Zoo Plants, Lars and Marianna Kjeldstrøm-Fisker (more informations).

The visitors of the Zlín Zoo have been admiring a group of Humboldt penguins since 1998. The exhibit of natural design comprises two pools.

• Exhibit of South American sealions
The Zlín Zoo is proud to be among very few zoological gardens in Europe breeding South American sealions. The attractive exhibit was reconstructed in 2000. The part of a large pool is glassed-in and you may also observe seals underwater. Their twice daily feeding ritual is accompanied by their unique performance they are trained for.
